Four ways to find the code you need

Which one to use depends on what you already know.

  • You have the six digits and want to know the place. Type the code into the search box. You will get the delivery post offices under it, the district, the postal division and the circle.
  • You know the locality or post office name. Type that instead. Spellings in the postal directory often differ from everyday usage, so if the first spelling finds nothing, try the shorter form of the name.
  • You only know the district or city. Start from the state below. District pages list every PIN code in that district, which is usually the quickest way to narrow down a rural address.
  • You are standing at the address. Use the current-location finder on the home page. It matches your coordinates to postal data and tells you when the answer is only approximate.

What the first digit tells you

The first digit of a PIN code is its postal zone — eight geographical zones plus one for the armed forces. It is the broadest clue in the code: before reading anything else, the first digit already narrows an address to roughly a quarter of the country.

  • 1 — Northern zoneChandigarh, Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Punjab
  • 2 — Northern zoneUttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand
  • 3 — Western zoneDadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, Gujarat, Rajasthan
  • 4 — Western zoneChhattisgarh, Goa, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra
  • 5 — Southern zoneAndhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Puducherry, Telangana
  • 6 — Southern zoneKerala, Lakshadweep, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu
  • 7 — Eastern zoneAndaman and Nicobar Islands, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Odisha, Sikkim, Tripura, West Bengal
  • 8 — Eastern zoneBihar, Jharkhand
  • 9 — Army Postal ServiceField and base post offices serving the armed forces. These codes do not correspond to a civilian address — the directory lists two Central Base Post Offices under them.

The next two digits narrow the zone to a sub-region, the third group identifies the sorting district, and the final three digits identify the delivery post office within it. Those last three are the part that changes most often between neighbouring streets.

Where this data comes from

Every record on this site is read from India Post's All India Pincode Directory, published as open data on data.gov.in. We use the 2021-12 snapshot exactly as published: office name, office type, delivery status, district, postal division and circle. Nothing is edited by hand and nothing is filled in by guesswork.

That has one consequence worth knowing. Post offices opened, closed or renumbered since that snapshot will not appear here, and a handful of names carry the spelling used in the original dataset rather than the local one. For anything that has to be right — a bank form, a property document, a shipment — confirm the code with India Post or at your local post office. If you spot something wrong, tell us and we will check it against the source.

This is an independent directory. It is not operated by, affiliated with or endorsed by India Post or any government department.
