"PIN Code Not Serviceable": What It Means and What to Do

You add something to your cart, type your PIN code, and the site says "not serviceable" or "delivery not available". Before you assume the code is wrong, know this: in most cases the message is about the seller’s courier network, not about your PIN code.

What "serviceable" means

Every private courier keeps its own list of PIN codes it delivers to. When you enter a code, the shopping site checks it against the courier partners it uses for that product. If none of them covers your code — or none covers it for that type of order — you get the "not serviceable" message.

  • The courier has no hub or delivery partner near your area.
  • The area is remote, so the courier only accepts prepaid orders there, not cash on delivery.
  • The item is large, fragile or restricted, and only some couriers handle it.
  • The seller ships from a warehouse that does not serve your region.
  • Rarely, the PIN code really is mistyped or does not exist.

Step 1: rule out a wrong PIN code

Check the code first. Search it here or open its page directly (for example /pincode-lookup/515631) and make sure the district and post offices match your area. If you are at home, detect the code from your location. If the code is real and correct, the problem is coverage, not the code.

Step 2: try these workarounds

  1. Switch to prepaid. Some couriers deliver to a code but not with cash on delivery.
  2. Try another seller for the same product. Different sellers use different couriers.
  3. Deliver to a nearby address you can reach — a workplace, a relative, or a friend in town — using that address’s own correct PIN code.
  4. Use a pickup point or locker if the platform offers one near you.
  5. Ask the seller whether they can ship by India Post Speed Post or registered parcel, which reach every PIN code in the postal network.

Do not enter a neighbouring PIN code just to get past the check while keeping your own address. The courier will route the parcel to the other area, and it is likely to be returned.

Why India Post reaches places couriers do not

PIN codes are India Post’s own system, and every code belongs to a post office. Branch offices — about five in every six of the 157,056 offices in India Post’s directory — serve villages that private networks often skip. Our guide to HO, SO and BO offices explains how that network is organised.

If you are a seller

If customers in some areas keep seeing "not serviceable", add a second courier partner or an India Post option for those codes. Check your courier’s serviceable list against the codes your orders come from, rather than assuming whole districts are covered.

Coverage lists change often as couriers open new hubs, so a code that was not serviceable last month may work today.

FAQ

Does "not serviceable" mean my PIN code does not exist?

Almost never. If the code exists in India Post’s directory, it is a real code. "Not serviceable" means the seller’s couriers do not cover it for that order.

Why does one app deliver to my PIN code and another does not?

Each platform and seller uses its own mix of courier partners and warehouses. One may have a partner with a hub near you; the other may not. Coverage also differs between small parcels and large items such as furniture or appliances.

Can I ask the courier to add my PIN code?

You can request it through the courier’s customer support, and some couriers use that feedback when planning new routes, but there is no guarantee or timeline. In the meantime, the workarounds above are faster.
