Moving to a New City? Your Address and PIN Code Checklist

A move changes your address on dozens of accounts, and the PIN code is the part most likely to go wrong, because you are looking it up for an area you do not know yet. Here is a practical order to work through. Processes vary between organisations, so follow each one’s own instructions.

Step 1: get the new PIN code right first

Everything below depends on it. Once you are in the new home, detect the PIN code from your location, then cross-check it by looking up your locality in the directory and asking the landlord, society office or a neighbour. Save the full address, exactly as you will write it, in one note — you will paste it many times.

Step 2: the address proof you will use everywhere

Many updates need proof of the new address. Decide early which document that will be — a registered rent agreement, a utility bill in your name, or an updated Aadhaar — because most other updates will ask for it. Updating Aadhaar through UIDAI’s official channels early often makes the rest easier, since many organisations accept it as address proof.

Step 3: money and identity

  • Bank accounts and credit cards — so cards, cheque books and statements reach you.
  • Insurance policies, investments and EPF records.
  • PAN and income-tax communication address.
  • Voter registration — shifting residence is handled through the Election Commission’s voter services.
  • Driving licence and vehicle registration, through the state transport department.

Step 4: everyday services

  • Mobile and broadband connections.
  • Cooking gas connection (transfer or new connection).
  • Saved addresses on shopping, food and travel apps — delete the old one so it is not chosen by mistake.
  • Employer HR records and payroll.
  • Children’s school, and any subscriptions or memberships.

Step 5: catch mail sent to the old address

Some letters will still go to the old address for months. Ask the new occupants or the landlord to keep anything that arrives, and ask at your old delivery post office whether mail redirection is available for your address. Keep a list of anything that arrives there, and update that sender next.

Keep current and permanent addresses straight

If you are moving for work or study and your home address stays the same, you may only need to change the current address on most accounts. Keep the permanent address, and its PIN code, consistent across your documents. Our guide on which PIN code to use on KYC forms explains the difference.

Before you submit each update, check that the city and state a form auto-fills from your PIN code match your new address. If they do not, the code is probably mistyped.

A simple tracking sheet

Make a short list with three columns: organisation, date updated, and confirmation received. Tick each one off when the first letter or statement arrives at the new address. That last step is the only real proof the update worked.

FAQ

How long does it take for mail to start arriving at the new address?

It depends on each organisation’s process. Some update instantly online; others need documents verified first. Track each update until something actually arrives at the new address.

Should I change my permanent address if I am renting?

That depends on your plans and on what each organisation accepts as proof. Many people renting in a new city keep their home address as permanent and update only the current address. If you plan to settle, updating the permanent address on your main documents avoids mismatches later.

What if my new society or colony has no clear PIN code?

New developments are attached to an existing delivery office. Ask the builder, society office or nearest post office which code is used, and confirm it with a test letter or a small parcel.
